(San Francisco, May 6, 2008) Gail Seneca and Jack Kornfield, executive board members of Foundation for the People of Burma (FPB), and Hal Nathan, President of FPB, today announced the launch of FPB’s Cyclone Relief and Rebuild Fund.

Official reports of tens of thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands left homeless, as well as reports from the foundation’s partner organizations detailing a critical lack of food, safe water, and safe shelter, have necessitated an intense fundraising appeal to provide emergency assistance. Foundation for the People of Burma’s immediate response to the disaster will focus on working with its existing partner network in Rangoon and on the Thai-Burma border to organize and financially support relief efforts, including:

  • Providing food and materials to monasteries/shelters for the newly homeless population in central Rangoon
  • Supporting the emergency supply and distribution of water filters
  • Assisting the efforts of FPB partners on the Thai-Burma border to purchase rice at fair market prices in Thailand and ship it to the affected areas
  • Supporting Burmese doctors and nurses that have offered FPB their assistance and are currently visiting monasteries/shelters to provide care for the wounded and surveillance to prevent disease outbreak
  • As FPB has worked in specific communities in Rangoon and southern Burma for many years, it is positioned to quickly address emergency needs in target geographies. This capability is critical as several international NGO’s await visas for personnel to begin working inside Burma. The Cyclone Relief and Rebuild Fund will accept a finite amount of total financial donations based on the estimated capacity of FPB’s partners to provide both immediate relief and extended support.

Donations to the Cyclone Relief and Rebuild Fund can be made at www.foundationburma.org or by check or money order to FOUNDATION FOR THE PEOPLE OF BURMA, 225 BUSH STREET SUITE 590, SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94104

Foundation for the People of Burma (FPB) was established in 1999 and is the largest independently supported U.S.-based Burma humanitarian organization. FPB’s programs provide direct service to communities in need of outside assistance. They are compassionate, creative and strategic interventions which facilitate positive, long-lasting change for those that face scarcity and lack personal freedom. The financial resources for FPB come primarily from individuals in the US and small-to-medium family foundations.
